About the course
Lifestyle block (LSB) properties are on the rise, and there is an increase in the variety of animals living on these small blocks, that need good veterinary care.
LSB farmers are usually well-intentioned animal owners but often lack basic farming and animal husbandry knowledge. They’re frequently unable to detect early warning signs of ill health in their animals or know how to treat it. Veterinarians are often called too late when the only option is euthanasia. Some LSB properties may not meet basic animal needs, and many have poor animal handling facilities which make it extra challenging for veterinarians to perform simple procedures. LSB owners often turn to free advice on the internet, neighbours or retailers before calling the vet. Does this all sound familiar?
The online section will be followed by an optional field trip with The Lifestyle Vet. You’ll see a variety of routine alpaca procedures, i.e. castrations, drenching, dental exams, foot trimming, and shearing, while discussing animal health plans for different scenarios.
The LSB industry is growing, and the veterinary profession needs to get behind it. The benefits are numerous, including improved animal welfare, better biosecurity, more satisfied and educated clients and an excellent move for veterinary businesses. Rather than dreading it, you will enjoy it!
