This year the NZVA Conference includes a number of workshops running on Friday 22 June. This field trip is open to all sheep and beef cattle veterinarians, whether or not you are attending the conference. If you are attending the conference we recommend you register for the field trip during your conference registration.

This one day field trip is an opportunity to connect further with your peers while learning about what happens behind the scenes at LIC and the Hamilton Zoo.

The day will start at Claudelands Event Centre around 8.45am. From here, the bus will take the attendees to LIC before heading to the Zoo where lunch will be served.


  • A tour of the facilities and a viewing of bull semen collection and processing.

  • Lunch at Hungry Morepork Caf
  • Behind the scenes tour
  • The role of a veterinarian at the zoo | Andrew Gore
  • Animal encounter with either lemurs, rhino or reptiles. The keeper will talk about how the species are cared for, issues they face in the wild, nutrition and enrichment, and conservation. (If you are sick, the Zoo requests that you do not participate in encounters with lemurs as illness can be passed between onto the lemurs.)
  • Wander around the Zoo at your own leisure.
