Calf Disbudding
The programme
The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a best practice standard for veterinarians involved in the process of humanely disbudding calves.
What's involved
Approved by the Society of Dairy Cattle Veterinarians of the NZVA, this standard provides the specific procedures that veterinarians must follow for the disbudding of calves to be humane. It defines the legal frame work under which veterinarians performing this procedure must operate and sets out guidelines for:
- Pre-disbudding consideration
- Restraint
- Sedation
- Local anaesthesia
- Systemic analgesia
The benefits
This SOP ensures a consistently high quality of service throughout the veterinary profession in New Zealand.
