Equity
Policy Type:
Policy
Status:
Current policy
Manual Reference:
1g
Date ratified:
23 May 2007
Policy
NZVA is committed to the principle of equity (impartiality) and the identification and elimination of all policies, procedures and barriers that could cause or tend to cause inequality of opportunity for its members.
Explanation
Behaviour of a profession towards its membership and to others it serves should encompass the principles of equality, impartiality and fairness, such that all feel equally treated.
The implementation of equity may require the provision of an unequal resource to achieve an equal outcome.
Relevant demographic trends in New Zealand society reveal:
- an aging population
- more women in higher education, training and the paid workforce
- diversity of ethnic groups in the workplace
- people with disabilities having a higher profile in the labour market
- an increasing number of part-time workers
- more workers with family responsibilities
Guidelines
- NZVA will demonstrate that it values and respects the diverse nature of its membership.
- Each issue affecting NZVA will be adjudicated upon with consideration for all its members and sector groups.
Note
Under the Human Rights Act, 1993, it is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of sex (including pregnancy and childbirth), marital status (including de facto relationships), religious and ethical belief, colour, ethnic or national origins, disability (physical, mental and including the presence in the body of organisms capable of causing illness), age (any age between 16 years and the age of eligibility to national superannuation), political opinion, employment status, family status (including having or not having responsibility for children or dependents) and sexual orientation.
