Salmonellosis situation - keeping you updated
Published date:
11 January 2012
Information currently being sent out to farmer clients following recent communications about salmonellosis outbreaks in New Zealand has the potential to be misinterpreted and to cause confusion and alarm.
We ask members to please hold fire on passing on any further information to farmer clients until after Fertco has released an update on Friday 13 January, which we will pass on to you directly.
While the use of Fertco's MineralBoost is very strongly associated with outbreaks, it is not a source of salmonella as such, eg. it's not contaminated with salmonella. Any product, circumstance, or activity which has the potential to alter the gut environment can trigger an outbreak. This includes home mixing of minerals, use of concentrates, alteration or reduction in feed, or over-dosing with mag-oxide.
If we focus on one issue alone we may lose sight of other potential causes.
