Become a veterinarian

If you'd like to pursue a career as a veterinarian, you’ll need a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) degree. This is your starting point for an interesting and diverse future.

Massey University's Institute of Veterinary and Biosecurity Science (IVABS), is the only training institute for veterinarians in New Zealand. You can find out more about veterinary training opportunities and associated course fees at vet-school.massey.ac.nz.

If you have a veterinary qualification from an overseas university you’ll need to register in New Zealand. You can do this through the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ).

What do veterinarians do?

Generally veterinarians diagnose, treat and help prevent disease and injury in animals. But this isn't limited to working in a clinic with small fluffy animals! The areas of work are diverse - see The Public Veterinarian presentation given to 3rd year veterinary students.

Our careers presentation covers everything you need to know to prepare yourself for studying a BVSc degree, including  entry requirements, job prospects, earning potential etc.
